When it comes to choosing countertops for your kitchen, there are several choices available. The primary driver that will dictate your final choice is usually your budget.

If money is no object, then almost anyone would go for a solid granite kitchen countertop. There is nothing like a good quality solid granite kitchen countertop complementing your kitchen cabinets. Elegance does come with a price though. Solid granite kitchen countertop needs a lot of care as it does absorb stains and can crack under duress (e.g. extreme heat and cold).

If your budget still allows it but you do not want to have the hassle of maintaining a solid granite kitchen countertop, the next option would be engineered stone kitchen countertops. These are manmade and are much more resilient than solid granite. Market brands like DuPont and Silestone carry many variations.

Solid surfaces are next in line as we go down the list. As a kitchen countertop, solid surfaces offer a wide variety of patterns and colors. You can even get away with a solid surface countertop that can pass off as a solid granite countertop if you get the right patterns. Although it quite stain resistant, solid surface countertops can be sensitive to heat so be sure to not rest your hot pans directly on the solid surface kitchen countertop!

Laminates are relatively inexpensive and quite easy to maintain. The seams do show though so you need to get a good installer to ensure that the seams are done right. Be extra careful with laminate kitchen countertops though as any scratches are quite difficult to repair.

If you like the professional restaurant kitchen look, then you might want to consider stainless steel countertops. Then you can pretend that you are a master chef in the kitchen! It can be a bit pricey though so mind your budget. Stainless steel kitchen countertops are easy to clean and hot pans are not a problem. Don’t drop anything heavy on it as that might leave a dent.

For a rough and tough outdoors kind of look, there is always the concrete option for your kitchen countertop. Nowadays, there are treated concrete that will not crack as easily as normal concrete. The concrete kitchen countertop is usually porous but this can be sealed with special treatment.

Last but not least, is a pure a marble kitchen countertop. Beauty is guaranteed. But with a hefty price tag and the risk of chipping it, you might to consider using pure marble only in areas of the kitchen where no real work is being done.

Recording on your home computer has never been easier to do than it is today. With the speed of the modern day computer you can do some pretty neat things with your recordings. Modern technology will take you a long way toward success but you still need to understand what is going on if you want to have a great recording. It does not take all that much computer recording studio equipment to have a nice little setup.

To record on your computer you will need a few essential items. You must start out with a powerful computer that has a pretty decent soundcard. The next step is to go shopping for the software you need to actually get the sound inside your computer. You will find a decent set of headphones handy to have around and the most important thing you need is a good microphone. This article will take a look at these items and how they relate to home recording on a computer.

You cannot do much computer recording without a computer. Almost any modern day system will get the job done. The faster CPU and the more memory you have the better. Many people like to build a special computer just for recording purposes. This may be overkill if you only want to record one or two tracks at a time. Next you need to add a good soundcard or audio interface to your system.

There are many choices you can make when picking out a soundcard or external audio interface. You do not have to spend a lot of money to get a decent sound but usually the more expensive brands have some features that you may need. It is wise to search the Internet and forums to see what people are saying about the different soundcards before spending your hard earned money.

You will need to get some recording software to add to your computer recording studio equipment. There are many brands to choose from the free Audacity to programs costing a lot of money. If your recording needs are simple you can probably get by with one of the cheaper packages. On the other hand if you want to record a band you will probably need to spend a few more bucks on one of the more expensive software programs.

Add a microphone to this must have equipment list and you will almost be done. Get the best mike you can afford as the quality of this piece of equipment has much to do with the final sound of your project.

The last thing you will need to complete a basic set up is a set of headphones so you can hear what is being recording. Get a decent set but you can get by ok with a simple pair of headphones.

As you can see you do not have to spend a lot of money on computer recording studio equipment to get started recording on your home computer. Take your time and choose your equipment carefully and you will not have to go this again in 6 months when you have figured out that the cheap stuff you bought just is not getting the job done.

Duct Tape

Uncategorized No Comments »

Search through any tool kit, and a common item found is duct tape. This strong, multi-purpose adhesive tape, usually measuring 1.88 inches wide, has evolved from its original purpose of joining together broken equipments. It is now a much sought-after material for creating novelty articles and fashion items, including a classy tuxedo. Duct tape is available in a wide range of colors. Transparent tapes are also available. Duct tape is often called ‘the ultimate material’ owing to its strength and versatility.

Duct tape was developed during the Second World War as a waterproof tape for sealing ammunition cases. It was called “duck tape” because of its water resistance quality. The army gradually widened its usage by utilizing it for fixing military equipments, guns, vehicles and even parts of aircrafts. The housing boom following the war saw duct tape being used for a variety of repair work. An important use of the tape was fixing air conditioning and heating ducts. This earned the tape its present name, duct tape.

Duct tape’s strength and versatility were famously displayed during the Apollo 13 mission of 1970. Following an explosion, the spacecraft’s lunar module had to be used as a lifeboat for saving the onboard astronauts. The spacecraft’s carbon dioxide filters had to be modified to fit round the lunar module’s receptacles. A workaround solution was made using duct tape and other materials available on board.

Although duct tape’s strength lies in its ability to hold together materials and broken parts, creative people have found a variety of other uses. Craftsmen and designers use duct tape to create a range of decorative objects and accessories such as handbags, wallets, purses, belts and even formal wear. There are even exclusive duct tape handbags belonging to famous fashion labels. Perhaps the most diverse use was reported in a medical paper published in October 15, 2002, that states that the duct tape is effective in treating warts.

If you’ve chosen wood patio furniture for your outdoor living space, you may be concerned about caring for your investment. Wood furniture is a great choice, even for areas exposed to the elements, as long as you care for it properly.

You have many choices in your finishes for your wood patio furniture. Many people choose not to finish their wood patio furniture at all, allowing it to weather naturally; while others use stains to give their furniture a classic look. Still others paint their outdoor wood furniture. If you want to keep your painted or finished outdoor furniture looking new, you’ll need to refinish or repaint it every two to three years, depending upon how much sun, cold and water it’s exposed too.

Regardless of your choice in finishes, your wood patio furniture needs good regular cleaning. Cleaning yearly with a pressure washer, along with regular milder soap and water cleaning should do the trick. Clean spills up as they happen to avoid water rings and stains.

You’ll also likely want to use some sort of protector on your wood patio furniture. There are many types available, in both water and oil bases. Water based products are easier to work with and easier to clean up, but oil based protectors will provide a longer lasting finish. If you live in an area that’s extremely wet, look for a protector with a mold inhibitor. If your summers are very hot, look for a product with a UV protector.

If you live in an area where winters are very cold, it is best to store your furniture indoors, if you have the space. If this isn’t an option, then using the protectors I mentioned above is even more important.

Beautiful wood patio furniture is a great investment for your home. Be sure to invest a little time and energy in your furniture’s maintenance, to ensure that it serves you well for many years to come.

We’re hearing a lot about blue stone recently and for good reason. This ‘natural’ stone is actually quarried in the United States and comes in a whole variety of beautiful hues. Bluestone is very versatile and is used to make many things for both indoors and outdoors.

In the home, it’s probably best known for its use in wall decorations, but it can also be found for surfaces such as countertops, tabletops, and even flooring. For floors, it is cut into tiles and is mostly found in kitchens and bathrooms.

Because blue stone comes in a variety of shades, it can be very adaptable to interior décor. We have a very long table in our dining room which has a lacquered bluestone stop, and it really is a striking piece of quality furniture. We also have a matching drinks trolley which together make for a very unique set.

I wouldn’t say we’re obsessed with blue stone but we’ve had the patio area laid with some rough textured tiles of various hues and they really bring a soft yet rustic feel to the area. With a couple of stained glass wooden patio doors as a backdrop, and 2 large big leafed potted plants, our patio really is an absolutely wonderful place to just sit and relax of an evening.

If ever you get the landscaper gardeners in, or want to redesign your own garden of Eden, take a look at how blue stone can play a part in your plans. It’s very versatile, it’s very colorful, and it can really beautify a garden if used in a creative way. Patios, walkways, walls, ponds, pebbles, or stepping stones are all doable in bluestone, so play around with the designs until you find a style that you get drawn to.

So, whether your thinking about an indoor or an outdoor project, think bluestone and give your home a whole new look.

If you’ve lived in your home for a long time, the chances are you’ve accumulated quite a lot of mismatched organizational accessories over the years, each one picked up to address a certain need in your home. Have you ever wished that these mismatched accessories actually matched?

I’m speaking in particular of the accessories in your closet. Plastic racks for your shoes, a metal rack for your ties and belts, some fibreboard shelves. Each one suits its purpose, and using them all will save you time in the long run. But they’re mismatched, and they don’t have to be.

Complete Closet Organization System
It’s time to think about installing a complete closet organization system. These systems - which provide places for your shoes, appropriate racks for ties and belts, and built in shelves - are available from quite a few manufacturers. And regardless of your financial situation, you’ll be able to find a system to fit your needs.

The first thing you’ll need to do is measure your closet, of course, to know the exact dimensions, from side-to-side and from top-to-bottom. Then measure it again. “Measure twice, cut once” is an old saying that still holds true today.

Then go out and get your system.

Rubbermaid provides a very economical design, which still looks good because everything matches. They call it Configurations by Rubbermaid. Their system is made out of gleaming metal, and there is no cutting, trimming or pre-measuring necessary, because it comes with telescoping rods to fit any closet from 4 feet to 8 feet. You merely screw the hang rails into your wall at the appropriate length, and then to this attach as many shelves, racks, and baskets as you need. As your clothing expands you can add more shelving.

Measure Once and Then Measure Again
Got your measurements ready? Then visit Closits Modular Storage webpage. They’ve got links to 7 different page of layouts depending on the depth and width of your closet, so you can see the most efficient ways of designing their modular system.

From Creative Spaces, you can get closet systems made out of solid wood instead of particle board or laminate. That always adds a touch of elegance to the decor. Their closets come in red mahogany or honey maple.

If you don’t have a large laundry room in which you can set out an ironing board, then you’ll want to have a fold-out ironing board included in your system. And a pants presser is always a nice touch.

Happy shopping.

Spring is finally here and it’s time to freshen up your decor. With a few simple updates your home can look anew. Here are a few quick tips to bring the new season into your home:

Flowers – Spring time means flowers. Fortunately, dressing a few vases around the house is a quick and easy way to liven up your home. Don’t go with fake flowers either – the smell of fresh, live flowers is an important component to your home’s ambience.
New colors – Winter is utterly dull and grey, so bring the colors of spring into your home to breathe new life into your decor. Try painting a room with a fresh, new pastel color. Light green and yellow are particularly in style now.
Floral print pillows – Change out darker colored decorative pillows with new floral prints for a warmer tone. For a more cost effective makeover, look for pillow covers instead of buying new pillows.
Lighten up – Put away all those heavy blankets around the house and bring out the light and airy cotton sheets. Also, try adding light and airy slipcovers for your dark and dreary sofas.
Clean out the Fireplace – Nothing speaks more to the winter than your fireplace. Now is the perfect time to sweep away the gray ashes of winter. Try adding a candle arrangement for a fresh new look.
Island décor – try adding a touch of the tropics to your home. Look for bamboo accents, such as bamboo picture frames and bamboo candles.
Clean, clean, clean – An old-fashioned spring cleaning can do wonders for your home. Escape from the dark and dreary clutches of winter by sweeping away the old and bring in the new.

Kitchens figure amongst the important rooms of the entire house. Recently, a lot of attention is being paid to their presentation and decoration. This is because the concept of a kitchen being just an interior-cooking place has undergone transformation. Today, kitchens attract architects to provide them with the challenge of designing and decorating each kitchen uniquely. The designs of a kitchen can be done in numerous ways depending upon the desired style, preferable location, available area, and specific budget. The basic elements of the kitchen are to attribute the right kind of items to their appropriate places.

A country kitchen differs from a regular kitchen on the grounds of its plumbing fixtures, ventilations, dishwashers, flooring, and refrigeration. The peculiarity of country kitchens is that all its cabinets and counters are made of wood to give an authentic atmosphere. Two types of wood are used to make the furniture, namely Cedar wood and Oak wood. Another specialty about these kitchens is their in-house plant life and window dressing styles. Flowers such as daises and posies provide freshness to the kitchen. The window-dressing, if done in bright colors such as in red, yellow, or blue, illuminates the entire surrounding.

The country kitchen tables are traditionally round or oval, having matching wooden chairs that can be cushioned with pillows to complement the window dressings. The color combination of the furniture, window dressing, and other modern appliances should be harmonious. To give the kitchen a touch of inimitable charm, accessories such as old model car candleholders, old aluminum serving trays, wooden clocks, and variety of mug collections can be used. To make the bona fide atmosphere complete, country kitchen floors can be made of hardwood floor paneling for the required rustic look.

Country Kitchens can be designed according to the needs of the family members and their tastes. Sometimes professionals are hired to provide expertise on the designing and setting of the entire kitchen.

Let’s face it; most of the time we spend at home in the United States (and certainly elsewhere) is spent in the kitchen or in the dining area, as some prefer to call it. In earlier times, homes often lacked a living room and the kitchen area served the multipurpose use of a place to take meals and a place to socialize and just plain relax.

In many places, things haven’t changed that much over the years because family traditions are typically hard to change.

An interesting fact is that the kitchen area often gets the least amount of attention when it comes to lighting even though it is one of the most commonly used areas of the house. The right kind of lighting in this room is critical because this gathering place should be inviting and comfortable. This means that the lighting should be both bright and functional as well as designed with eye-appeal in mind.

One of the benefits when selecting lighting for this area is that more is often better than less. Multiple, smaller light fixtures can be used to illuminate the main food preparation area, while some low-voltage fixtures can be used to highlight decorative artwork such as teapots, a set of china or figurines. Low-voltage lighting is perhaps the most under used type of lighting used in this area.

While we are on the subject of low-voltage lighting, let’s go into a little detail about what it actually is. Low-voltage lighting are usually small, round lights that are a few inches in diameter. They are ideal for lighting under and inside cabinets. They can be just the perfect fixture for a sink valance and only your imagination limits their use. Fixtures are readily available in both 10- and 20-watt lights. A 12-volt transformer is necessary for these lights to work as well as another 60-watt transformer.

Control flexibility is a major feature of low-voltage lighting. Small switches can be installed that turn the light(s) on or off every time a cabinet is opened or closed, for example. Dimmer switches are also a common addition to a low-voltage light and will provide just the right level of lighting.

One of the popular trends today is the use of strip lights in the kitchen. These lights are very easy to install since they can simply be clipped under the area to be highlighted. While strip lighting runs off of 120V current, the longevity of the lighting fixture makes it an attractive option. While there is no hard and fast rule, these lights generally last over 30,000 hours and rather than replacing the entire unit, today’s strip lighting lets you simply replace the bulb and you are in business again. Because of their increase in popularity, manufacturers have developed a wide variety of styles and colors from which to choose.

Visit a large hardware store or a home improvement center and you will see for yourself that kitchen lighting has come a long way in terms of what is available to fit any decorating scheme or décor.

While there are a wide variety of kitchen lighting ideas available, the key is not to become overwhelmed. The primary thing to always keep in mind is what your kitchen looks like, including its size and location in your home. Also, how is your kitchen used? Do people spend a great deal of time there even when they’re not eating? What impression do you want to create when friends and family congregate in the kitchen? Start out by looking through the tons of home and garden magazines available today. Don’t be overly impressed by a kitchen that has too much style for the tastes and lifestyle of your family. Look at the details. You may find one idea here and one idea there that fit what you’re looking for. Keep in mind that these magazines usually have a hefty budget and that some of the lighting pictured may be out of your price range. If you are a social creature, take a look at the way kitchens are decorated and the way lighting is used in homes you visit. Ask your friends what, in particular, they like about the way their kitchen looks. People like to talk about their homes.

Depending on your budget, you can always seek professional sources that specialize in home decorating. There are professionals that specialize as consultants in the area of home lighting. A word of caution. There are no professional credentials required to advertise oneself as a lighting consultant. If you just grab someone from the yellow pages or from the services available section of your local newspaper, you may be in for trouble. I’ve heard horror stories where a homeowner selected a consultant that offered their services for a price that seemed very good. The result was too much lighting in the wrong areas and just the right amount of lighting in areas that didn’t really need much, if any lighting. When we add up the consultant’s fee, the cost of the fixtures and new wiring that needed to be added, the bottom-line was a nightmare for the homeowner.

Fortunately, there is a fail-safe way to avoid this kind of problem. The United States and Canada benefit from an organization named ALA (American Lighting Association). Members of this association are required to demonstrate top rate knowledge and experience in the field of lighting. They all share a commitment to recommending quality lighting and the application of just the right lighting configurations for the areas in question. The key word to remember when considering an ALA-member consultant is that they always look for the optimal use of resources and the needs of the homeowner.

Don’t rely on your own abilities and resources or questionable experts when making lighting decisions. The skills, knowledge and ability of an ALA-member lighting consultant is always your best bet.
Here are some final thoughts. It’s a given that you want to select the highest quality lighting fixtures you can afford and it’s equally important that you select just the right styles that fit your kitchen décor and you personal tastes.

I suggest that you avoid discount stores or any stores that offer bargain prices. You get what you pay for and your lighting should be selected at a level of quality that will provide you with years and years of top-flight service and dependability.

Visit an ALA approved showroom and take along photos of your kitchen area to help the experts on staff gain a sense of what your kitchen offers in terms of resources. It’s also a good idea to bring dimensions of your kitchen area including countertops and the overall dimensions of the room. ALA member-consultants can quickly get a feel for what resources you have available as well as what can be done to maximize their usefulness and eye appeal by suggesting just the right kind of lighting.
